Jack and the’ is a pop project led by Julien Lonchamp, a Frenchman in exile in Edinburgh. In February 2016 Jack and the’ released their second album Melody Cycle on Folkwit Records (UK), Hot Puma Records (Belgium) and WeWant2Wecord (France). The ambition behind Melody Cycle is to combine catchy melodies influenced by 60s’ pop with rich orchestrations and cascading harmonies, in the tradition of the great orchestral pop records.
Written and recorded in Edinburgh, Dublin and Nancy (France) over two years, Melody Cycle features no less than 18 musicians, including a brass quintet and the 7-piece Apostrophe Ensemble. Clarinet, trombone, vibraphone, cello but also banjo or sitar populate the 18 tracks of the album, with the band going full circle between pop, chamber music and jazz. So far the album has garnered rave reviews from Paris to Glasgow, including 4 and 5 star-reviews in Record Collector and Shindig! Magazine. In March the song Melody Cycle ♯1 was selected for Tom Robinson’s BBC6 Introducing Mixtape.
Jack and the’s debut album Vacation (a pop manifesto) was written during Julien’s unfortunate PhD in food science in Dublin. Swapping research on lettuce aromas for home recording, Julien then entrusted his songs to the crème de la crème of French pop producers (Orwell, Variety-Lab and Cascadeur). Originally available in Thailand via Smallroom Records, Vacation was released on Folkwit Records (UK) in 2012.
Jack and the’ usually performs as a five-piece composed of Tom Pickles (flute, saxophone), Craig Macfadyen (bass), Angus Munro (keyboards), Scott Jamieson (drums) and Julien Lonchamp (vocals, guitar). “It takes little to no time before it’s obvious this is a band of huge talent. Lonchamp has clearly assembled Edinburgh’s finest” (7aheadmusic). In 2016 the band completed two Melody Cycling tours, which saw them perform in Belgium, France and the UK (no cycling whatsoever involved!), including a fully orchestrated gig with the Apostrophe Ensemble in Edinburgh in June 2016.

L’idée derrière Melody Cycle est de combiner des mélodies accrocheuses directement influencées par la pop sixties avec de riches orchestrations et des harmonies en cascade, dans la tradition des grands albums de pop orchestrale.
Ecrit et enregistré à Edimbourg, Dublin et Nancy pendant deux ans, Melody Cycle met en scène pas moins de 18 musiciens, dont un quintette de cuivres et un orchestra de musique contemporaine (Apostrophe Ensemble). Clarinette, trombone, vibraphone, violoncelle mais encore banjo our sitar peuplent les 18 morceaux, qui voient le groupe osciller entre pop, musique de chambre et jazz. En mars 2016 la chanson titre Melody Cycle ♯1 a été sélectionnée pour la prestigieuse BBC6 Introducing Mixtape de Tom Robinson en Grande-Bretagne. "A savourer jusqu’à l’indigestion" (Gonzaï), l’album a entre autres reçu 4 et 5 étoiles dans les mytiques revues anglo-saxonnes Record Collector et Shindig! Magazine.
Le premier album de Jack and the’ Vacation (a pop manifesto) fut écrit pendant la malheureuse thése en sciences des aliments de Julien à Dublin. Echangeant volontiers ses recherches sur les arômes de salades pour des enregistrements maison, Julien confia ensuite ses chansons à la crème de la crème de la pop française pour le mix (Orwell, Variety-Lab et Cascadeur). Disponible à l’origine en Thailande sur Smallroom Records, Vacation sortit sur Folkwit Records in 2012.
En 2016 Jack and the’ a présenté son nouvel album sur scène en Grande-Bretagne, France et Belgique lors de deux tournées intitulées Melody Cycling, avec en apothéose un concert orchestral à Edimbourg en juin 2016 accompagné par l'Apostrophe Ensemble.
